SUMMARY:Piano at Powers with Justin St. Clair
DESCRIPTION:Drop in for this free show and warm up with an afternoon coffee\, latte\, espresso\, tea or hot soup. Homemade sandwiches and salads available from the kitchen too. Hailing from North Bennington\, Justing is a Mount Anthony Union High School (MAUHS) graduate and is currently a senior at the University of Rhode Island (URI)\, majoring in jazz piano and music therapy. He has had the opportunity over the past years to study jazz piano from great mentors Zaccai Curtis and Andrew Wilcox. Justin has performed in some major ensembles like the Dave Zino’s Standards Ensemble\, Zaccai Curtis’ Afro-Cuban and Latin Ensemble\, and the URI Jazz Big Band lead by Dr. Emmet Goods. The most notable performance for Justin was when he played with the URI Rams Band this past summer at the 2024 Newport Jazz Festival. \nWhile a student at MAUHS\, Justin had the opportunity to take part in Big Band\, Jazz Band and to study with piano teacher Matt Edwards. He also took part in VAE’s Bennington Music Exchange project where he wrote\, recorded and performed his first original work alongside musicians and recording engineers\, Sam Clement and Matthew Scott. Justin has performed locally at Prospect Coffee House with fellow Jazz friend Dave Cuite and has sat in with the local favorite band\, Beard and Glasses at the North Bennington Outdoor Sculpture Show’s opening party. \nVAE is happy to present Justin as part of their emerging artists program. Formed in 2021\, Kidbrass has played regularly around New York City including residencies at The Bitter End\, The Sampler and Double.  Featuring members of Castle Rat\, Cab Ellis\, Nour Harkati\, Yuchtet and others\, members of Kidbrass have performed at Radio City Music Hall\, Jazz at Lincoln Center\, Bowery Ballroom and elsewhere. Kidbrass has earned their reputation as a band that works. Decadent electric guitar\, tenor sax\, trumpet\, drum and even bass solos take turns melting faces\, but their music always strives to include and elevate\, not alienate. DESCRIPTION:Bennington College Sculpture Show \n\n\nOpening; Sunday\, December 8th\, 1pm – 4pm \n\n\nThe public is invited to “Draw Yourself Sleeping”\, an exhibition of work by fourteen Sculpture Students from Bennington College at the North Bennington Train Depot Gallery. The show opens  for a one-time only viewing and reception on Sunday\, Dec 8th\, 1pm – 4pm. The North Bennington Train Depot is located at 5 Depot Street in North Bennington. All are welcome and refreshments will be served. \n\n\nIn Bennington College’s Sculpture Studio / advanced practice course\, taught by faculty member John Umphlett\, students propose and execute projects of their own design. On exhibit will be work by Charlie Bell\, Jasmine Bete-Mitchell\,  Tali Mars\, Hollis Churchill\, Vic Coronel\, Julia Duva\, Chris Golovina\, Mac Goulis\, Aliza Khan\, Ethan Laird\, Nico Migdal\, Nicholas Pertz Kelley\, HaL Price\, and Lulu Wiley \n\n\n“’Making face’  is so important and engaging for the students\, to feel the pressure and realize it’s just a conversation. “  Umphlett states\,“Each student has been developing their practice and critiquing each other\, discussing prior critiques\, how the work can be read and what observations to further consider. Their works have been presented primarily on campus everywhere from controlled dark installation spaces to dance studios and outside. The students have been using this class to expand their advanced practices here at Bennington\, incorporating transferable skills and concepts developed in and outside of the visual arts. They have been challenging themselves to focus on work that pokes at complicated themes while they continue to direct material shaping towards their personal ethos.  The opportunity to show their work beyond the institution creates real world challenges. The practical aspects of installing a show combined with the responsibility toward self to propose their ideas into a larger community is priceless. SUMMARY:Billy Wylder Comes to Bennington
DESCRIPTION:Vermont Arts Exchange (VAE) is happy to partner up with Little City Cider for a night of dancing and having fun with the lively\, Billy Wylder. Join us Saturday\, December 7th\, at Little City Cider at 139 Shields Drive\, Bennington\, VT.  Doors open at 6pm and show starts at 7pm. \nFrom the front-lines at Standing Rock to the archaic streets of Jerusalem\, the Sahel Desert to Carnegie Hall\, music has been the source of strength for Billy Wylder. The band features Avi Salloway (Bombino/Hey Mama/Avi & Celia) joined by an inspired cast of singular artists who have performed across six continents including concerts at Coachella\, Newport Folk Festival\, New Orleans Jazz Fest\, Montreal Jazz Fest\, Carnegie Hall\, and Lincoln Center. \nThis is the last show of the season for the band as they wind up their touring in 2024. The music weaves together American folk and rock with sensibilities from the Sahara Desert\, exploring new musical space akin to Devendra Banhart\, Beck\, and Tinariwen. The musical evolution of Billy Wylder is built on grooves informed by ancient African rhythms\, art-rock textures\, expansive guitars\, violins\, synths\, and drum machines. Salloway’s lyrics flow with inspiration from mythical songwriting hero Leonard Cohen\, while threading together more abstract imagery reminiscent of Thom Yorke. \nTheir latest album\, Trying to Get Free was recorded at Great North Sound Society (Parsonsfield\, ME)\, Alta Mira Sound (Alhambra\, CA) and Zumix (East Boston\, MA) and produced by Salloway and celebrated producer Sam Kassirer (Lake Street Dive\, Josh Ritter). The band is named after Salloway’s grandmother\, Wilma “Billie” Hotaling.” She was a prolific painter\, author\, musician\, and educator”\, states Avi. \nTickets are $10 for students and $15 general admission purchased in advance and are available at https://billywylder.com/shows. DESCRIPTION:This concert is free and open to the public. \nAs part of the Basement Music Series\, Vermont Arts Exchange (VAE) is excited to present a night of brass-fueled\, swinging music of New Orleans with the Soggy Po Boys\, Friday\, May 3rdat 7pm at the Mount Anthony Union (MAU) High School Auditorium at 301 Park Street in Bennington. \n\n\nVAE puts on this concert to celebrate thirty years as a non-profit community arts organization\, committed to arts education and empowering youth through music. As part of this special concert\, VAE has partnered with the Soggy Po Boys to hold a day-long school residency with both Arlington Memorial High School and the MAU music departments during the day. Students will work alongside the seven talented musicians and break out into in sessions in percussion\, voice and instrumental ensembles. As part of the evening experience\, students will join the band on stage for a few songs and surprises for the audience. VAE Director Matthew Perry says\, “This part of the evening will be fun because it will not be rehearsed. The energy will be high and the students onstage will be learning a lot about improvisation and performing\, all in front of a live audience. Well\, ‘fun’ for us.”

DESCRIPTION:The Vermont Public Theater in collaboration with Vermont Arts Exchange\, Vermont Community Foundation and Vermont Public presents a reading of Truman Capote’s holiday classic A Christmas Memory\, performed by renowned actor Dan Butler and directed by Dina Janis. The reading will be held at Little City Cider in Bennington on December 9th at 7 pm.\n\nPerformances are free but audiences are encouraged to make a donation to VCF’s VT Flood Response and Recovery Fund.\n\nThis first presentation is in partnership with Vermont Arts Exchange and will be followed by a performance at the Savoy Theater in Montpelier on December 15th at 6pm\, concluding with a final showing at Vermont Public’s Stetson Studio One in Colchester on December 19th at 7pm. There is no charge to attend these performances but audiences are encouraged to make a donation to Vermont Community Foundation’s VT Flood Response and Recovery Fund.

DESCRIPTION:The Vermont Arts Exchange (VAE) is happy to announce a free community concert with an “End of Summer Latin Dance Party”.  Come enjoy Alex Torres and his Latin Orchestra on Saturday\, August 27th at 4pm at Merchant’s Park in Downtown Bennington. This will be our tenth time presenting Alex going back to 2002 at Lake Paran where we partied all night up on the hill overlooking the lake. \nFormed October 1980 in Amsterdam\, NY\, this twelve-piece orchestra is led by the Bronx-born bassist Alex Torres.  They have been presented by hundreds of festivals\, performing arts centers and events annually to perform their original blend of Afro-Caribbean rhythms such as Salsa\, Merengue\, Cha-cha\, Bomba\, Plena and Latin Jazz.  J Kochalka\, from Vermont describes an Alex Torres concert saying\, “From then on a holiday carnival air prevailed and there was no stopping the dancers.” Don Wilcox from Bluesprint\, NY notes\, “…the moment I will cherish most was watching people of all cultures and colors dancing\, transfixed by the Latin rhythms of Alex Torres & His Orchestra.” – Don Wilcox\, Bluesprint\, NY \nJoin VAE for this free concert as we thank our community for all their support over the years. There will be some food & drink onsite or pick up a to-go dinner at one of our local restaurants\, set up a lawn chair and get ready to enjoy some fabulous music and time with friends. SUMMARY:28th Annual North Bennington Halloween Parade
DESCRIPTION:It’s that time of the year and the pandemic isn’t stopping the 28th Annual North Bennington Halloween Parade. Changing up the format this year to a “Stay In Your Car” Parade on Halloween day\, Saturday October 31st with a 4pm start time. Prizes will be awarded to the best-dressed vehicles\, cars\, trucks\, trailers\, and motorcycles and passengers\, so start your planning now. \nImportant note!! The parade route will be new this year. Starting at 3:30 participating vehicles will meet at Bennington College’s back parking lot near Greenwall Auditorium/VAPA\, entering through the Harlan Road entrance where volunteers will direct you to the parade line up. The parade will start at 4pm at the College’s old stone gate at the top of Prospect Street\, proceeding down into the Village\, turning right at Lincoln square-fountain\, continuing up Main Street to end at the Train Depot.  Due to current restrictions\, there will be no bonfire or gathering after the parade.  Costume prizes will be announced on VAE’s Facebook page and website on Monday morning. Although staying in your car is the safest bet for those in the parade\, we ask that parade spectators practice social distancing and please wear masks. If not wearing a mask as part of your costume\, grab some Sharpies and decorate your cloth or disposable mask. The judges will be on the look out for the best decorated “Covid” mask. \nThis year we are asking parade participants to make a donation of $10 – $20 per vehicle. This will greatly help VAE put on this free\, annual event during a particularly tough year for organizations. Donations will be collected on the way out through the stone columns of the College’s gate as we meander our way down into the Village. \nThe Bennington Traditional Jazz Bandwill play live music from Lincoln Square\, which will also be home base for the parade judges. Free grilled hot dogs\, courtesy of Powers Market\, will be distributed by members of the Norshaft Lions Club. Pangaea will be open and featuring coffee from Angelica and The Roasted Bean Espresso Bar as well as new treats from their patisserie. Plan on dinner to go or eat outside at Marigolds Pizza\, Kevins or Pangaea for a great local dinner out!
