SUMMARY:"Surfs Up" - The Village School of North Bennington All Student Art Show
DESCRIPTION:“The Village School of North Bennington All Student Show is one of our favorite exhibitions to host” says Rhonda Ratray\, Artist in Residence at the Left Bank and curator of the Maurice Kahn Gallery\, “The artwork is exciting and creative and it’s wonderful to see the pride the students have in their work. I regularly hear from visitors to the gallery that they are delighted by the exhibition”. \nTeaching Artist\, Caitilin McAdoo and Assistant Maria Scully worked with the students throughout the school year to create a show in which you’ll see paintings\, ceramics\, papier mâché\, chickens\, fish\, things made with recycled materials\, and prints. Says Caitilin\, “We turned paper plates into jellyfish and chickens. We used shredded documents from the office to make our own paper clay and utilized egg cartons and plaster of Paris to make fish that move. We tried new techniques for acrylic paint pours. Sixth graders designed their own independent projects based on what they were interested in. Second Graders wrote a book. Fourth graders learned some techniques for painting formal portraits. We carved our own printing blocks and made prints. Fifth Graders made plywood fish and Third Graders used the scraps to make their own sculptures. Pre-k students learned that elephants sometimes turn out to be giraffes and tanks can feature laser pointers for cats”. \nDon’t miss one of our favorite shows of the year.

DESCRIPTION:Vermont Arts Exchange presents Junk Music™ with The Junkman™\, Sunday\, April 27th 2-4 pm Bennington Museum’s Paresky Court. The concert celebrates the closing of VAE’s 30 year anniversary exhibition titled “From the Studio to the Streets\, 30 Years of Community Engagement through the Arts”. The exhibit is on display in the lobby entrance gallery. The concert is free to the public. \n\n\nThe Junkman  will present an overview of his music throughout the years\, discuss his relationship with VAE and especially their new projects for the immediate future. He’ll lead the audience in a Junkjam where they can pick up a provided reused material and sticks\, and take part in a communal Junkjam!

SUMMARY:Piano at Powers with Justin St. Clair
DESCRIPTION:Drop in for this free show and warm up with an afternoon coffee\, latte\, espresso\, tea or hot soup. Homemade sandwiches and salads available from the kitchen too. Hailing from North Bennington\, Justing is a Mount Anthony Union High School (MAUHS) graduate and is currently a senior at the University of Rhode Island (URI)\, majoring in jazz piano and music therapy. He has had the opportunity over the past years to study jazz piano from great mentors Zaccai Curtis and Andrew Wilcox. Justin has performed in some major ensembles like the Dave Zino’s Standards Ensemble\, Zaccai Curtis’ Afro-Cuban and Latin Ensemble\, and the URI Jazz Big Band lead by Dr. Emmet Goods. The most notable performance for Justin was when he played with the URI Rams Band this past summer at the 2024 Newport Jazz Festival. \nWhile a student at MAUHS\, Justin had the opportunity to take part in Big Band\, Jazz Band and to study with piano teacher Matt Edwards. He also took part in VAE’s Bennington Music Exchange project where he wrote\, recorded and performed his first original work alongside musicians and recording engineers\, Sam Clement and Matthew Scott. Justin has performed locally at Prospect Coffee House with fellow Jazz friend Dave Cuite and has sat in with the local favorite band\, Beard and Glasses at the North Bennington Outdoor Sculpture Show’s opening party. \nVAE is happy to present Justin as part of their emerging artists program. Formed in 2021\, Kidbrass has played regularly around New York City including residencies at The Bitter End\, The Sampler and Double.  Featuring members of Castle Rat\, Cab Ellis\, Nour Harkati\, Yuchtet and others\, members of Kidbrass have performed at Radio City Music Hall\, Jazz at Lincoln Center\, Bowery Ballroom and elsewhere. Kidbrass has earned their reputation as a band that works. Decadent electric guitar\, tenor sax\, trumpet\, drum and even bass solos take turns melting faces\, but their music always strives to include and elevate\, not alienate. DESCRIPTION:Bennington College Sculpture Show \n\n\nOpening; Sunday\, December 8th\, 1pm – 4pm \n\n\nThe public is invited to “Draw Yourself Sleeping”\, an exhibition of work by fourteen Sculpture Students from Bennington College at the North Bennington Train Depot Gallery. The show opens  for a one-time only viewing and reception on Sunday\, Dec 8th\, 1pm – 4pm. The North Bennington Train Depot is located at 5 Depot Street in North Bennington. All are welcome and refreshments will be served. \n\n\nIn Bennington College’s Sculpture Studio / advanced practice course\, taught by faculty member John Umphlett\, students propose and execute projects of their own design. On exhibit will be work by Charlie Bell\, Jasmine Bete-Mitchell\,  Tali Mars\, Hollis Churchill\, Vic Coronel\, Julia Duva\, Chris Golovina\, Mac Goulis\, Aliza Khan\, Ethan Laird\, Nico Migdal\, Nicholas Pertz Kelley\, HaL Price\, and Lulu Wiley \n\n\n“’Making face’  is so important and engaging for the students\, to feel the pressure and realize it’s just a conversation. “  Umphlett states\,“Each student has been developing their practice and critiquing each other\, discussing prior critiques\, how the work can be read and what observations to further consider. Their works have been presented primarily on campus everywhere from controlled dark installation spaces to dance studios and outside. The students have been using this class to expand their advanced practices here at Bennington\, incorporating transferable skills and concepts developed in and outside of the visual arts. They have been challenging themselves to focus on work that pokes at complicated themes while they continue to direct material shaping towards their personal ethos.  The opportunity to show their work beyond the institution creates real world challenges. The practical aspects of installing a show combined with the responsibility toward self to propose their ideas into a larger community is priceless. Join us Saturday\, December 7th\, at Little City Cider at 139 Shields Drive\, Bennington\, VT.  Doors open at 6pm and show starts at 7pm. \nFrom the front-lines at Standing Rock to the archaic streets of Jerusalem\, the Sahel Desert to Carnegie Hall\, music has been the source of strength for Billy Wylder. The band features Avi Salloway (Bombino/Hey Mama/Avi & Celia) joined by an inspired cast of singular artists who have performed across six continents including concerts at Coachella\, Newport Folk Festival\, New Orleans Jazz Fest\, Montreal Jazz Fest\, Carnegie Hall\, and Lincoln Center. \nThis is the last show of the season for the band as they wind up their touring in 2024. The music weaves together American folk and rock with sensibilities from the Sahara Desert\, exploring new musical space akin to Devendra Banhart\, Beck\, and Tinariwen. The musical evolution of Billy Wylder is built on grooves informed by ancient African rhythms\, art-rock textures\, expansive guitars\, violins\, synths\, and drum machines. As part of this special concert\, VAE has partnered with the Soggy Po Boys to hold a day-long school residency with both Arlington Memorial High School and the MAU music departments during the day. Students will work alongside the seven talented musicians and break out into in sessions in percussion\, voice and instrumental ensembles. As part of the evening experience\, students will join the band on stage for a few songs and surprises for the audience. VAE Director Matthew Perry says\, “This part of the evening will be fun because it will not be rehearsed. The energy will be high and the students onstage will be learning a lot about improvisation and performing\, all in front of a live audience. Well\, ‘fun’ for us.”

DESCRIPTION:Friday\, October 20th and Saturday\, October 21st at 7pm \nAn imaginative outdoor installation of light\, sound and movement by George Stadnik and Brian DeAngelo. “Dream Garden” comes to the Hiland Hall Garden in North Bennington on Friday\, October 20th and Saturday\, the 21st at 7pm. This immersive experience is free to the public and suitable for all ages. \nThis project is an evolution of “Dialogue Nordique”\, the 2022 immersive after hours event\, performed at the Bennington Museum. Under the direction of Stadnik and DeAngelo\, approximately 20 more artists engage in Dream Garden. Performers include musicians involved in DeAngelo’s “Conduction” piece\, visual imagery and lighting projection teams led by Stadnik and dance-movement artists. “This colossal collaboration comprises a talented cross section of local and regional professionals\, emerging talent and students from Bennington College”\, says VAE’s Artistic Director and co-conspirator\, Matthew Perry. \nDream Garden creates a space and time\, as a multi sensory\, immersive\, synaesthetic experience that triggers the imagination. Guests will discover new insights about life and time as a living garden transforms into a fantastical creative play space.  DeAngelo leads the conduction throughout the evening with a six piece ensemble of musicians. DeAngelo\, responding to ambient sounds and sights\, conducts the group with various gestures\, coercing responses in a dialogue\, entangling with the Garden as a soundtrack for the evening’s activities. Stadnik and the Lumia team create a live mix of visuals that both respond to DeAngelo’s orchestral energy and open new vistas for the music to evolve. In essence the entire space and time will become a realization of everyone’s collective imagination. Acting as a stage\, the garden space will welcome guests to meander about as artists operate from stations projecting light\, reflected imagery\, moving shadows and live video captures. The greenhouse will contain a Lumia composition titled “Dream Machine”. Movement artists are another live dimension to the scene\, interacting with projections\, the music and guests throughout the space. The projected visual content includes imagery from local artists\, historic photos from the property and the artists’ own original compositions. The important aspect of this performance is that everything is created as a live response to the inspired imaginations of the artists and guests. \nPerry says\, “Most performances we produce have the audience passively observing. Dream Garden invites the audience into the performance space\, to take part\, engage\, as well as observe\, at their own comfort level. The audience is invited to wander about\, move with the music\, with others or go warm up by the fire”. Please come dressed warmly. \nStadnik has composed Lumia for film\, galleries\, festivals\, universities\, planetariums and collaborations with other artists since the early 1970s. His work has taken him all over the country and abroad through exhibitions\, installations and performances. Most recently he installed a piece in the Haunted Vermont Exhibit at the Bennington Museum.  Other recent installations include the Moshava Gallery\, Cell Theatre and Plaxall Gallery in New York City\, and site specific installations in Paisley Scotland and Soulton Long Barrow\, Wales. George’s work is found in corporate and private collections including; several universities nationwide\, the Museum of Modern Art Archive\, Iota Center\, Center for Visual Music\, Optical Publishing Company and other corporate collections. \nBrian DeAngleo is an active and adventurous educator\, composer\, and percussionist who resides in Bennington\, Vermont. Brian is primarily a drummer/percussionist/composer whose creations are intended for an audience of thinkers\, dreamers\, imaginers; those who sense that there is something that occurs day to day\, moment to moment\, but do not affluently prosper in most man-made societies. Brian currently is teaching percussion at Bennington College. He has studied at Goddard College’s MFA-IA program\, the New School’s BFA program in Jazz/Contemporary Music\, ethnic studies in Senegal and Ghana\, and the exploration of nonanthropogenic subcultural sounds. \nDream Garden is made possible by a grant from a very generous Vermont family. \nHiland Hall Garden is located at 3 Park Street\, North Bennington\, Vermont.
