Show starts at 8pm. \nPossessing an airy\, light voice with a sly touch\, jazz vocalist Kat Edmonson brings both the songs and the sensibility of the Great American Songbook into the 21st century. A Texas native and Brooklyn transplant\, Edmonson forged her sound performing in small rooms and clubs before touring worldwide and performing with Lyle Lovett\, Chris Isaak\, Jaime Cullum and Gary Clark\, Jr. In less than a decade since\, Edmonson has emerged as one of the most distinctive performers in contemporaryAmerican music. As a child\, Edmonson latched on to old black-and-white movies while watching FredAstaire and Ginger Rogers fall in love through snappy\, song-and-dance numbers. She also spent hours combing through her mother’s record collection featuring soundtracks to old musicals\, jazz standards\, and big-band hits. Although she draws inspiration from classic Hollywood movies and a bygone time\, Edmonson does not reflect too heavily on the past\, often saying in interviews that she is grateful to be here today\, in this day and age. Her music that has that 1930’s\, ‘40s\, and ‘50s flair but her own songs are of modern love and life (and the occasional woe of technology with lyrics like\, “Are you tired of being assailed by barrages of emails\, and are pop-up ads destroying your morale?” \nHer first three albums all exude a twinkly throwback charm\, taking form in jazz-cabaret\, folksy indie\, and vintage pop. Her independently produced debut album “Take to the Sky”(2009) drew on America’s timeless Tin Pan Alley songwriters\, Gershwin\, and Cole Porter\, and ended up on the Top 20 of the Billboard jazz charts. A critic for the Boston Globe called her second album “Way Down Low”\, “one of the greatest vocal albums I’ve ever heard.” Her third\, “The Big Picture”\, took greater advantage of her songwriter abilities. A critic for NPR noted\, “She’s a savvy student of ‘60s film soundtracks\, jazz-pop stylists\, and Brill Building songcraft.” The Austin Chronicle wrote that her songs emerge “fresh and dewy…Edmonson’s voiceswells and dips and weaves with effortless precision\, arresting without belting.” \nHer latest album\, “Old Fashioned Gal”\, is rich in affection for the past but bracinglyalive in the present. In it\, Edmonson tells a story-a classic Hollywood “movie” that took shape in Edmonson’s imagination as she began to write. These songs have all the feeling and the craft\, even the entertaining bounce\, of the Great American Songbook\, from Irving Berlin to Joni Mitchell but they are unmistakably Kat Edmonson’s songs\, taking the full measure of her own voice. DESCRIPTION:Sunrise Family Resource Center and Vermont Arts Exchange continue their partnership offering weekly workshop sessions for dads and their children.  Coming up will be a special “Holiday Workshop”\, which will run 6:00 to 7:30pm on Thursday nights from November 29thto December 20th.Ramuntos will continue to generously donate a delicious pizza and salad that are shared at the start of class. \nJust in time for the holidays\, these classes will focus on making gifts such as; wood burned coasters\, printed wrapping paper\, cards\, gift tags and tote bags\, wooden frames for photos or artwork and various sewing projects.  VAE Teaching Artist\, Kristen Blaker will facilitate this session. Upcoming Dad workshops throughout 2019 include; drumming\, woodworking and some special one-day events so stay tuned for those dates. This program has been made possible through a grant from the Children’s Trust of Vermont and support from our local Ramuntos Brick Oven Pizza. \nThe classes are no charge but registration is required and space is limited\, first come\, first served\, no drop-ins. DESCRIPTION:Vermont Arts Exchange (VAE) presents the annual North Bennington Halloween Parade now in its 26th year! Join us at our location at 48 Main Street in North Bennington on Wednesday\, October 31st as we celebrate our favorite “Horrorday” with spooky\, spirited\, festive family fun. Participants will gather at VAE’s parking lot beginning at 3:30pm while the parade steps off at 4:00pm. All are welcome to join the fun as a marcher or cheer on from the sidelines. \nThe parade ends at Lion’s Park where the Norshaft Lions will be on hand selling cider and hotdogs around a village bonfire. This annual tradition has become a local must see as infants to adults break out their Halloween best\, showing off major costume making skills to be in the running for one of the many costume awards. Marchers\, monsters\, artists\, musicians\, dancers\, drummers\, jugglers\, friends and neighbors of all ages dress up and promenade through town\, accompanied by music. Bring your instruments and join the impromptu band. DESCRIPTION:Opening Reception: Friday\, June 2\, 5:00-7:00pm\, open to the public \nArtwork will be exhibited through the month of June. \nVermont Arts Exchange (VAE) is pleased to announce the exhibition of drawings and paintings of local artist Joey Bishop. The Opening Reception will be held Friday\, June 2nd from 5:00-7:00 pm at the Brown Cow Café\, 139 Main Street Bennington\, Vermont. The exhibit will be on display for several weeks during regular business hours. \nJoey was born in Bennington 1960 and attended Brandon Training School at a young age. He then enrolled in Special Education classes at Catamount School and then at Mount Anthony Union High School\, graduating in 1982. Joe has worked at P & C Foods and Hannaford bagging groceries\, Big Boys Toys\, Shaftsbury Country Store and NSK. He currently lives in Shaftsbury with Kevin Bushee and his family and can be seen observing and plotting his next drawing on the bench at McCullough Library\, Earl’s Gas Station or at Willy’s Variety Store. \nFor over ten years Joey has called VAE his art studio. In this time he has created hundreds of drawings and paintings\, which now have been curated for an exhibition and sale. Working closely with Joey over the years\, artist-teacher and VAE Executive Director Matthew Perry says\, “Joey’s focus and inspiration are his community and friends. He is no stranger to Bennington\, which he observes on a daily basis. He then records on paper and canvas the subjects of Bennington and North Bennington’s Main Street; the markets\, churches\, libraries and the hustle and bustle of traffic. It’s all exciting to him.” VAE teaching artist Matthew Marks worked closely with Joey for two years\, drawing mainly out on the sidewalk and in cafes during the colder months to keep warm and enjoy coffee. Marks echoes Perry’s thoughts on Joey’s process saying\, “All of this flows out of Joe like water. It flows effortlessly and joyfully. Just like Joe.” Joey’s work also shows his imagination with pieces like the one on the exhibit post card\, “New York City as I imagine it”\, and a painting of Hawaii\, a place he’d like to visit. Joey also works from memories of favorite times and places like summers at Camp Thorpe. Perry states\, “Joey’s artwork is pure and honest. When asked to think and respond to questions about why he makes art or how it feels to make art\, his response is simply….’ ”It makes me happy’. ” \nVAE is pleased to continue its more than twenty year partnership with United Counseling Services in providing art services to their community. DESCRIPTION:Opening Reception: Thursday\, April 6\, 5:30-7\, open to the public \nArtwork will be exhibited through the month of April. \nVermont Arts Exchange (VAE) is happy to announce the Second Annual Village School Art Exhibit at the Brown Cow Café at 139 Main Street in Bennington\, Vermont. A special reception will be held on Thursday\, April 6th from 5:30-7:00pm with refreshments and limited café service available. The exhibit will be on display for several weeks during regular business hours. \nIn its first year of serving the students in pre-school through grade six at the Village School of North Bennington\, Vermont Arts Exchange is excited to publicly show the student work in a variety of media. The art team consists of three VAE artist-teachers (Gabrielle Rynes\, Charlotte Lyons and Kristen Blaker)\, two assistants (India Abbott and Katrina Hastings)\, and several interns from Bennington College. The large team allows for one on one work in classrooms with large numbers of students\, high productivity with unusual materials\, and the ability to use art to enhance lessons completed in the regular classroom. SUMMARY:“In Short\, the Minor”: The 10th Annual Bennington Printmakers Show at the North Bennington Train Depot
DESCRIPTION:The Vermont Arts Exchange presents\, “In short\, the minor” an exhibition of print work by eleven Intermediate-Level Printmaking students from Bennington College at the North Bennington Train Depot. The opening reception will be on Wednesday\, November 30th from 7-9 pm. The show will be open to the public on Thursday\, December 1st from 6:30-8pm\, Friday\, December 2nd\, 5-7pm\, Saturday\, December 3rd\, 10am-12pm\, and Sunday\, December 4th\, 1-3pm. \nThe students in this year’s Intermediate-Level Printmaking course at Bennington\, taught by faculty member Thorsten Dennerline\, have proposed and executed projects of their own design\, while reading artists’ writings to inform and contextualize their personal work. Isabella Adler\, Olivia Barnum\, Esme Chant\, Livia Chelsey\, Wallace Crehan\, Miranda Gibbs\, Zoe Huey\, Kat Jagai\, Isabella Poulos\, Zadie Ross\, and Mary Alice Stewart will present these projects in a variety of media\, including lithography\, intaglio\, collagraphs\, monotypes\, woodcut relief\, and silkscreen. \nWorking in a traditional studio class structure comprising of critiques\, discussions\, and group work periods\, the students focused in a wide variety of processes and materials. Isabella Poulos is at home in her repetitious building of color and line while building a structure to hold personal histories. Miranda Gibbs uses lithography and monotyping to create a set of handmade books\, as well as a series of prints and tapestries focused on female and maternal relationships. Mary Alice Stewart uses woodcut relief on paper mixed with fabric and text to construct a quilt. Zoe Huey is interested in challenging the viewer through depictions of landscape\, with considerations of their own relationship to nature. Olivia Barnum explores abstract line imagery through the re-working of a single plate. Similarly\, Livia Chelsey explores the process of painting over a preexisting image she created\, etching it into a copper plate. Esme Chant works with monotypes and silkscreen to create collages of prints that focus on geometric abstraction. Isabella Adler explores the concept of healing wounds in an installation using collagraphs with monotypes. Zadie Ross works to re-contextualize textile and wallpaper patterns by changing what medium it is printed on and its presentation. Kat Jagai is interested in naturalistic forms and world building with wood blocks. \nMounting final work as a group show in a public community venue both reinforces the community spirit and collaborative nature of printmaking\, in which artists share a print shop\, equipment\, ideas and techniques. It also offers an important challenge to student artists to create\, curate\, and publicize their work to an audience beyond campus. This year’s exhibition is the print department’s second use of the Train Depot\, which has offered the students a new venue to consider developing and mounting their work.

SUMMARY:New Exhibit in VAE's Artreach Project - Nova Scotia Series by Mallory Bratton Rich
DESCRIPTION:VAE’s “Artreach Project” welcomes Mallory Rich to Taconic Spine\, 3505 Richville Road Manchester Center\,Vermont.\nThe paintings in this exhibit are the result of the artist’s time on Nova Scotia in 2015. After a particularly long winter in Vermont\, Mallory Rich and her photographer friend\, Martha Folsom\, spent the month of May circumnavigating the island of Nova Scotia in search of seafood\, sea air and the sound of the ocean.  Mallory Bratton Rich is a self-taught artist from Sandgate\, Vermont\, who began painting late in life and who pursues her new passion every day. Her work has received recognition and awards throughout New England. Artreach brings art to the people with gallery exhibits in non traditional places such as backyards\, businesses\, post offices and waiting rooms.
