SUMMARY:Advanced Beginner Wheel Throwing: Lidded Jars – With Katie Montovan
DESCRIPTION:Ages 18+ \nWednesdays\, September 2nd-23rd \n12-2:30pm  \n$230 \n25# clay\, glazes\, firings included.  Additional clay available for purchase. \nAlso included with the purchase of this class is access to this session’s self guided Clay Labs\, of which each current student is entitled to up to three hours of per week. During Clay Lab\, students will be able to hone skills and work on projects. Labs will not have an instructor but will be monitored.  \nClay Lab \nMondays\, September 14 – October 26\, 3-6pm  \nWednesdays\, September 9th – October 28th\, 8:30-11am \nThursdays\, September 3rd – October 29th\, 12-3 and 6-9pm \nEach student is entitled to up to 3 hours of Clay Lab time per week.  The student can choose to use it all at once or split it up into separate days. \n In this four week class\, we will learn to make three different types of lidded containers. We will practice throwing and shaping the jars and measuring and fitting the lids. Classes one and two will be focused on throwing the jars and lids. In class 3 we will trim our jars and lids. DESCRIPTION:August 3-7 \nMonday-Friday 9-3 \nAges 8-12 \nInstructed by Madalyn Olson and Lee Williams \n$300 \nThis unique week-long camp has the day divided with two teaching artists bringing their own special art mediums to our campers. \nThe first half of the day starts off with multi-media artist Madalyn Olson in the VAE Clay Studio exploring the world of hand-building. You’ll create one-of-a-kind clay creations from bowls and cups to animals and birds. Campers at any skill level will be able to improve their techniques in building and glazing while creating functional and non-functional ceramic pieces. \nAfter lunch\, the second half of the day takes you outside to the Art Shed with sculptor Lee Williams. You’ll work on drawings that lead to building sculptures and look examples of his work and others as inspiration and to look further at how sculptures are put together. Available materials for building your own sculptures include natural materials from our environment like vine\, wood\, and recycled objects. A variety of power and hand tools will be used and shown how to properly use them. \nA mini exhibition will be held at the end of the week\, showing off the week’s creations! One day we’ll work with the folks from the Battenkill Watershed Alliance along the Walloomsac River. Each camper will get to plant a tree along the river while learning how it helps the not only the riverbank but the fish and the habitats of bugs and critters. As well as participate in the removal of invasive species such as bittersweet. \nArt making will happen back at the studio with group and individual sculptures made from materials such as the invasive plants we collect on our outings. DESCRIPTION:8-Weeks \nSundays 3-5:30 \nApril 26-June 14 \nInstructor: Katie Montovan \n$355 includes glazes\, firings and 25lbs clay with more available for purchase \nAlso included with the purchase of this class is student access to this session’s self guided Clay Labs where current students will be able to hone skills and work on projects. Labs will not have an instructor but will be monitored. Clay Labs will be Wednesdays from 5-8pm and from April 27th to June 15th. \nIn this 8-week class for adults\, learn to make pots on a wheel\, or advance your skills. This class will cover all the basics and will meet participants where they are with lessons on advanced topics to meet interest. Learn to make functional or decorative cups\, bowls\, vases\, and mugs with handles. Or come in with your own goal and we can work to get there! We will also cover wedging clay\, centering\, trimming\, glazing\, centering larger amounts of clay\, adding texture\, altering forms\, and clay reuse/recycling. Prior clay experience is helpful but not required. \nKatie is an artist\, mathematician\, and experiential educator with two decades of experience in all of those areas. She is both a painter and a ceramic potter. On the wheel she makes a variety of functional work and often manipulates the forms\, adds hand built parts\, and interesting textures. Additional clay will be available for purchase. \nJoin us in the VAE Ceramics studio for the inaugural Mid-week Mud Club. We’ll meet weekly for 10 weeks to make work\, think about work\, and investigate the work of national\, international\, contemporary and historic potters and ceramic sculptors. \nLiz earned a B.S. in Art Education from SUNY New Paltz\, an M.S. in Art Education from The College of St. Rose\, and an MFA from the Rochester Institute of Technology. She has taught at both the high school and college level\, including a four-year Visiting Assistant Professorship in Ceramics at RIT’s School for American Crafts and as Artist-in-Residence at the Tainan National University of the Arts Graduate School in Taiwan. Liz has also been invited to give visiting lectures at institutions such as Skidmore College\, the University of Montana\, the University of Northern Colorado\, Kansas State University\, and Utah State University. Liz loves teaching art and believes deeply in its ability to connect us—to our own creativity and to one another. Whether in the classroom or a community ceramics studio\, she sees making as a shared\,\n​human experience rooted in curiosity and connection. \nStudents should come with prior ceramics experience in hand-building\, wheel-throwing and/or both. We’ll discuss individual project plans Week #1. In this class you will learn about the basic properties of clay\, the foundations of working on the pottery wheel including centering\, throwing and trimming\, decorating and glazing techniques along with the safety around the use of the materials and the studio. Focus will be on simple forms such as cups\, mugs and bowls with room to explore.\n\n\nRob Viglas earned his BFA in Sculpture\, from UMass Dartmouth. After graduating he worked as a welder and apprentice to a master mold maker in an old dairy building in Pawtucket\, RI. He then went on to work as a mold maker for a glass artist and a studio assistant for other artists while going back to UMass to get his K-12 teaching certificate for Art. While back at school he took a Ceramics class and was immediately hooked and did his student teaching in the clay studio at Tabor Academy. Upon finishing school\, he and his wife moved to Vermont and set up a pottery studio in an old barn until they found a place in the woods nearby\, where they hand built their straw bale house and plastered it with a clay based plaster. Rob was lucky enough that his first full time teaching job at MAUMS\, where he ended up teaching Art for approximately ten years with his wife\, had several pottery wheels and two electric kilns so he was able to introduce students to working on the wheel. Rob and his family and are in the finishing stages of building their own Art studio which includes spaces for painting\, printmaking and clay with plans to build a small wood fired kiln. \nBuy Tickets
