DESCRIPTION:Presented by Vermont Arts Exchange\, in partnership with Better Bennington Corporation\, Sponsored by the Bank of Bennington \n\nFree Dance lessons 4-5pm with Tango Fusion Dance Co.\nHomemade Latin Food by Latina Chef Carolina Ponce available for purchase\nBring a Lawn Chair or blanket\nRain venue @ Bennington Theater around the corner\n\nFormed October 1980 in Amsterdam\, NY\, this twelve piece orchestra is led by the Bronx-born bassist Alex Torres.  They have been presented by hundreds of festivals\, performing arts centers and events annually to perform their original blend of Afro-Caribbean rhythms such as Salsa\, Merengue\, Cha-cha\, Bomba\, Plena and Latin Jazz. \nThe Orchestra has been the recipient of numerous awards including the New England Cultural Arts Preservation Award\, the New York State Music Achievement Award\, the Schenectady League of Arts Award\, The Governor´s Excellence in Arts Award\, The NAACP Albany Chapter Award and three awards from NY Capital District Original Music Awards in 2016. \nAlex Torres & His Latin Orchestra have performed for President Bill and Hillary Clinton at the New York State Democratic Convention and also for New York Governor’s George Pataki and Eliot Spitzer’s Inauguration. They have shared the stage and billings with such major acts as Tito Puente\, Tito Puente Jr.\, Eddie Palmieri\, Andy Montañez\, Los Hermanos Moreno\, Arturo Sandoval\, Luis “Perico” Ortiz\, Ray Barretto\, Jane Burnette & The Spirits Of Havana\, Larry Harlow\, Jose Alberto “El Canario\,” Brenda K. During Clay Lab\, students will be able to hone skills and work on projects. Labs will not have an instructor but will be monitored.  \nClay Lab \nMondays\, September 14 – October 26\, 3-6pm  \nWednesdays\, September 9th – October 28th\, 8:30-11am \nThursdays\, September 3rd – October 29th\, 12-3 and 6-9pm \nEach student is entitled to up to 3 hours of Clay Lab time per week.  The student can choose to use it all at once or split it up into separate days. \n In this four week class\, we will learn to make three different types of lidded containers. We will practice throwing and shaping the jars and measuring and fitting the lids. Classes one and two will be focused on throwing the jars and lids. In class 3 we will trim our jars and lids. Class four we will glaze our pieces and discuss adjustments to the glazing process for lidded containers.  \n Katie is an artist\, mathematician\, and experiential educator with two decades of experience in all of those areas. She is both a painter and a ceramic potter. On the wheel she makes a variety of functional work and often manipulates the forms\, adds hand built parts\, and interesting textures. As a teacher\, she focuses on providing enough structure and guidance to motivate\, challenge\, and support students and provides plenty of room for students to play and find their own way to make the work their own! \nClick HERE to register

Labs will not have an instructor but will be monitored.  \nMondays\, September 14 – October 26\, 3-6pm  \nWednesdays\, September 9th – October 28th\, 8:30-11am \nThursdays\, September 3rd – October 29th\, 12-3 and 6-9pm \nEach student is entitled to up to 3 hours of Clay Lab time per week.  The student can choose to use it all at once or split it up into separate days. \nThis eight week class is designed for adult students with some prior wheel throwing experience who are ready to expand their skills. Students will be introduced to slab building techniques using templates\, patterns\, and shape molds as well as altered wheel-thrown techniques to create refined functional pottery. Each session will include a mix of instruction\, individualized feedback\, and independent studio time. This class is ideal for those looking to deepen their relationship with clay\, slow down their process\, and explore new forms without total dependence on the potter’s wheel. \nLiz earned a B.S. in Art Education from SUNY New Paltz\, an M.S. in Art Education from The College of St. Rose\, and an MFA from the Rochester Institute of Technology. She has taught at both the high school and college level\, including a four-year Visiting Assistant Professorship in Ceramics at RIT’s School for American Crafts and as Artist-in-Residence at the Tainan National University of the Arts Graduate School in Taiwan. Liz has also been invited to give visiting lectures at institutions such as Skidmore College\, the University of Montana\, the University of Northern Colorado\, Kansas State University\, and Utah State University. Liz loves teaching art and believes deeply in its ability to connect us—to our own creativity and to one another. No prior experience is required. In this hands-on 8 week class\, students will learn core techniques such as preparing clay\, centering\, pulling walls\, shaping simple forms\, trimming\, and various glaze techniques. With guided instruction students will learn how to transform the clay into functional pieces of art such as coasters\, spoon rests\, bowls \, plates\, cups and mugs with handles. This class is ideal for anyone curious about ceramics\, whether you’re exploring a new hobby\, spending time with friends\, or beginning your pottery journey. \nFloyd-Wheat Robinson has been a ceramic artist for nearly 20 years. He first fell in love with the art of ceramics at the young age of eight when he took his first hand building introduction course. From then on he knew his life would involve clay. Throughout grade school he continued taking ceramic classes. With his love of ceramics and the arts he decided to pursue a bachelor’s degree in fine arts with a concentration in ceramics from West Virginia University. While attending university he studied abroad in the ceramic capital of the world\, Jingdezhen China in 2010 and 2014. After graduating in 2016 he traveled the east coast to find a career in the ceramic manufacturing and production business. That led him to being a Master Potter in Training at Bennington Potters from 2017-2020. Currently he is the production and shop manager at Thirsty Cat Fountains in Cambridge\, NY\, producing artisanal ceramic water fountains for cats. He also has a home studio where he creates functional ceramics to sell at local artisan markets and work on commissioned wares. Throughout the session\, you’ll explore forms drawn from flora\, fauna\, and other organic shapes\, learning how to translate living elements into three-dimensional clay work. You’ll practice core hand building techniques including pinching\, coiling\, slab construction\, hollow form building\, and surface carving. Each week builds on the last\, guiding you from simple studies to more developed sculptures. Projects may include plant forms\, animal figures\, natural textures\, and abstract organic shapes. Instruction covers design\, working with solid and hollow forms\, refining details\, and preparing pieces for drying and firing. This class emphasizes skill development\, observation\, and hands on practice\, making it suitable for students who are new to sculpture as well as those looking to expand their ceramic abilities. This course is designed to help you build confidence\, learn essential techniques\, and create nature based ceramic sculptures from start to finish. \nMadalyn brings over a decade of teaching experience and a background in early childhood education\, ensuring a supportive\, student-centered\, go at your own pace\, approach that encourages creativity and personal expression. Madalyn began exploring sculpture with her polymer clay hyperrealist/surrealist portrait sculptures. In recent years she has shifted her medium to ceramics. Her personal work is greatly influenced by the natural world and human emotion. She now works full time as a lead ceramist for an artisan ceramic fountain company.
