DESCRIPTION:8-Weeks \nSundays 3-5:30 \nApril 26-June 14 \nInstructor: Katie Montovan \n$355 includes glazes\, firings and 25lbs clay with more available for purchase \nAlso included with the purchase of this class is student access to this session’s self guided Clay Labs where current students will be able to hone skills and work on projects. Labs will not have an instructor but will be monitored. Clay Labs will be Wednesdays from 5-8pm and from April 27th to June 15th. \nIn this 8-week class for adults\, learn to make pots on a wheel\, or advance your skills. This class will cover all the basics and will meet participants where they are with lessons on advanced topics to meet interest. Learn to make functional or decorative cups\, bowls\, vases\, and mugs with handles. Or come in with your own goal and we can work to get there! We will also cover wedging clay\, centering\, trimming\, glazing\, centering larger amounts of clay\, adding texture\, altering forms\, and clay reuse/recycling. Prior clay experience is helpful but not required. \nKatie is an artist\, mathematician\, and experiential educator with two decades of experience in all of those areas. She is both a painter and a ceramic potter. On the wheel she makes a variety of functional work and often manipulates the forms\, adds hand built parts\, and interesting textures. Additional clay will be available for purchase. \nJoin us in the VAE Ceramics studio for the inaugural Mid-week Mud Club. We’ll meet weekly for 10 weeks to make work\, think about work\, and investigate the work of national\, international\, contemporary and historic potters and ceramic sculptors. \nLiz earned a B.S. in Art Education from SUNY New Paltz\, an M.S. in Art Education from The College of St. Rose\, and an MFA from the Rochester Institute of Technology. She has taught at both the high school and college level\, including a four-year Visiting Assistant Professorship in Ceramics at RIT’s School for American Crafts and as Artist-in-Residence at the Tainan National University of the Arts Graduate School in Taiwan. Liz has also been invited to give visiting lectures at institutions such as Skidmore College\, the University of Montana\, the University of Northern Colorado\, Kansas State University\, and Utah State University. Liz loves teaching art and believes deeply in its ability to connect us—to our own creativity and to one another. Whether in the classroom or a community ceramics studio\, she sees making as a shared\,\n​human experience rooted in curiosity and connection. \nStudents should come with prior ceramics experience in hand-building\, wheel-throwing and/or both. We’ll discuss individual project plans Week #1. In this class you will learn about the basic properties of clay\, the foundations of working on the pottery wheel including centering\, throwing and trimming\, decorating and glazing techniques along with the safety around the use of the materials and the studio. Focus will be on simple forms such as cups\, mugs and bowls with room to explore.\n\n\nRob Viglas earned his BFA in Sculpture\, from UMass Dartmouth. After graduating he worked as a welder and apprentice to a master mold maker in an old dairy building in Pawtucket\, RI. He then went on to work as a mold maker for a glass artist and a studio assistant for other artists while going back to UMass to get his K-12 teaching certificate for Art. While back at school he took a Ceramics class and was immediately hooked and did his student teaching in the clay studio at Tabor Academy. Upon finishing school\, he and his wife moved to Vermont and set up a pottery studio in an old barn until they found a place in the woods nearby\, where they hand built their straw bale house and plastered it with a clay based plaster. Rob was lucky enough that his first full time teaching job at MAUMS\, where he ended up teaching Art for approximately ten years with his wife\, had several pottery wheels and two electric kilns so he was able to introduce students to working on the wheel. Rob and his family and are in the finishing stages of building their own Art studio which includes spaces for painting\, printmaking and clay with plans to build a small wood fired kiln. \nBuy Tickets

SUMMARY:"Surfs Up" - The Village School of North Bennington All Student Art Show
DESCRIPTION:“The Village School of North Bennington All Student Show is one of our favorite exhibitions to host” says Rhonda Ratray\, Artist in Residence at the Left Bank and curator of the Maurice Kahn Gallery\, “The artwork is exciting and creative and it’s wonderful to see the pride the students have in their work. I regularly hear from visitors to the gallery that they are delighted by the exhibition”. \nTeaching Artist\, Caitilin McAdoo and Assistant Maria Scully worked with the students throughout the school year to create a show in which you’ll see paintings\, ceramics\, papier mâché\, chickens\, fish\, things made with recycled materials\, and prints. Says Caitilin\, “We turned paper plates into jellyfish and chickens. We used shredded documents from the office to make our own paper clay and utilized egg cartons and plaster of Paris to make fish that move. We tried new techniques for acrylic paint pours. Sixth graders designed their own independent projects based on what they were interested in. Second Graders wrote a book. Fourth graders learned some techniques for painting formal portraits. We carved our own printing blocks and made prints. Fifth Graders made plywood fish and Third Graders used the scraps to make their own sculptures. Pre-k students learned that elephants sometimes turn out to be giraffes and tanks can feature laser pointers for cats”. \nDon’t miss one of our favorite shows of the year.

DESCRIPTION:Vermont Arts Exchange presents Junk Music™ with The Junkman™\, Sunday\, April 27th 2-4 pm Bennington Museum’s Paresky Court. The concert celebrates the closing of VAE’s 30 year anniversary exhibition titled “From the Studio to the Streets\, 30 Years of Community Engagement through the Arts”. The exhibit is on display in the lobby entrance gallery. The concert is free to the public. \n\n\nThe Junkman  will present an overview of his music throughout the years\, discuss his relationship with VAE and especially their new projects for the immediate future. He’ll lead the audience in a Junkjam where they can pick up a provided reused material and sticks\, and take part in a communal Junkjam!
