First Friday – Main Street Music Series – The Jeff McCrae Quartet
August 5, 2016 @ 8:00 pm - 11:00 pm
-
Four musicians take to the stage presenting old school jazz in a manner that exemplifies the musical synergy that takes places when artists get together. VAE Director Matthew Perry says “This energy that happens onstage is most times not rehearsed, sometimes explosive and other times, smooth as silk, always moving…to be in the audience allows you to be one with the experience, the creation.” What makes this iteration of the Jeff McRae Quartet unique is the presence of three percussionists. Darryl Kniffen on piano, Jay Sager on the marimba, and Jeff McRae on drums bring an uncanny rhythmic communication to their playing. Add in local stalwart, Dave Cuite on bass, and what you get is an evening of risk taking and spontaneity in the context of familiar and not-so-familiar jazz tunes spanning the 1950s-1970s, jazz’s most dynamic and fruitful era. Jeff McRae states “The performance aims to pull back the covers of the finished and well-mannered concert experience to expose how live jazz is made.
